RETURN POLICY ON THREAD: Like most needlework retailers, we do not allow returns on thread except when there has been an error on our part. Please keep this in mind before you buy. When in doubt, we recommend you buy and test a small amount prior to ordering larger quantities. We have very low shipping charges of approximately $4.25 (subject to change) sent to US addresses(subject to change) for small thread orders to enable you to do this affordably. There are many reasons for this, but a primary reason is that once the thread has left our store, we can no longer verify that it has been kept clean and unused, and in most cases, we can no longer tell which dye lot a given thread came from. Therefore you can be confident that the thread you buy from us is clean, unused, and that we can send you multiple skeins from a single dye lot when that is important. If you buy thread from a company that accepts returned thread, how do you know where the thread they sell you has been before it gets to you?
CONVERTING THREAD: From time to time we get requests to convert thread from one brand to another or one type to another. This can be an extremely difficult and time-consuming task and we regret that we are no longer able to offer this service.
SILK THREADS FOR HAND EMBROIDERY
This page last updated March 29, 2026.
Silk is the ultimate stitching fiber for many of us. It has a look and feel that no synthetic thread can match; it dyes beautifully, and has a soft, lovely sheen. The specific look of a given silk thread depends on the type of silk an individual thread is made from, and the amount of twist imparted to it (thread made from fi nt silk is shinier than spun silk, twisted silk looks more "corded" and flat silk has more of a smooth, satiny look). The manufacturers of most brands of silk (Au Ver a Soie, Soie Cristale, Silk Mori, etc.) recommend dry cleaning while a few (Trebizond and Zwicky) are supposed to be washable. Lighter shades of most brands of silk may be washable; but it is always a good idea to test each color before using it, even if the thread is supposed to be washable.
The first few types of silk thread listed are made by a French company named "Au Ver a Soie"® (this is pronounced "Oh verr ah swah"). This company has been manufacturing thread since 1820. Different types of threads that they manufacture include Soie d'Alger (pronounced "swah doll-zhay". Many people actually know and refer to soie d'alger as Au Ver a Soie® but technically Au Ver a Soie® is the name of the company that makes the threads Soie d'Alger, Soie Perlee, Soie Gobelin, Soie 100/3, , and Soie Chenille, among others. The word soie (pronounced swah) in French means silk, so you will see many different silk threads that incorporate the word soie in their name.
SOIE D'ALGER SILK from Au Ver a Soie® - This is a spun silk. Technically it is a 55/2/7 silk. This means that the size of the thread is size "55", it will separate into 7 individual stitching "threads," and each individual stitching "thread" is made of a 2-ply twist of the silk - the 2 plies are not meant to be divided. We have the full color range (620 colors!) available. This silk is sold by the strand or by the hank. Strands measure approximately 42". Hanks are 45 meters (approximately 49 yards). We try very hard to keep all colors in stock, but if you need full hanks of a color, most of the time these will have to be special-ordered for you, so please allow an extra 2 weeks for hanks.

Soie de Paris comes in colors that sometimes coordinate with soie d'alger, so that you may use both in your designs to get a different texture, without changing color. Periodically colors of soie de Paris that were formerly available turn into "inactive" colors (not necessarily discontinued, but out of stock with no time frame for when they will be dyed again). The color range of this thread changes often enough (with new colors added and older ones put on "inactive" status the best place to check the current color list is on the US importer's website "download" page:
Access Commodities Thread List Downloads
Older spools of Soie de Paris came on small 5 meter (5.5 yard) spools for $4.60 per spool. Newer spools are arriving that have the same yardage but are put on a larger size spool and these newer putups are now $5.40. We have a mix of older $4.60 and newer $5.40 spools on hand. Depending on the colors you order, you may get a mix of the two until they have all switched to the new size of spool.
SOIE PERLEE from Au Ver a Soie® (pronounced swah pear-lay) is another thread made by this fine French company. It is shiny and tightly twisted. It is about the diameter of #8 pearl cotton. It comes in a different color range than it did several years ago - the current color range is actually far more extensive than it was in the past. To see a numerical listing of current colors, visit the "downloads" page on the Access Commodities website and select the PDF file for Soie Perlee.
SOIE GOBELIN from Au Ver a Soie® is similar to Soie Perlée, but finer. It too comes in a somewhat different color range than in the past. Because available colors change from time to time, rather than list them here, the current color range for Soie Gobelin is available on the Access Commodities website download page:
SOIE DE PARIS from Au Ver a Soie® is the newest offering from the Au Ver a Soie® company of France (manufacturers of soie d'alger among other fine threads). It is a six-ply thread made of twisted filament silk, so it is very strong and shiny. With all the debate as to the use of the terms "ply" and "strand" what I am referring to is that as it comes off the spool, this thread divides into 6 individual stitching threads, much as DMC floss or stranded cotton. The advantage of this is that you can use any number of individual strands to get a stitching thread of the desired weight/thickness.

SOIE OVALE from Au Ver a Soie® is a French flat silk. Flat silk is a beautiful, untwisted silk with a lustrous, satiny finish. It is harder to work with than other silks, having a tendency to snag, but with experience you can learn to handle it. This thread USED to be sold in the U.S. under the name Soie Platte but in France it has been called Soie Ovale, and from now on this is the term that will be used for it in the U.S. as well. These currently come on 15 meter spools but are transitioning gradually to larger spools/higher price. The range of available colors does fluctuate as news colors are added and older colors that are sold out and not currently being dyed added to a list of "inactive" colors. We are not notified when this happens so information on our website may not be 100% up-to-date in terms of which colors are available. We regret that trying to show colors of this thread on the internet with any accuracy is too difficult to attempt at this time.

TREBIZOND is wonderful! A shiny, twisted silk, about twice the weight of soie perlée (similar in weight to size 5 pearl cotton), this thread is supposed to be colorfast (of course it's always advisable to test any thread for washability under your own conditions). It is a good fit on 18 mesh needlepoint canvas.
Availability of Trebizond colors can change often without notice to us. For this reason we suggest you check the current color list is on the US importer's website "download" page: Access Commodities Thread List Downloads

Gloriana Threads are hand-dyed silk threads. These are available in several different types, including silk floss, silk pearl (in two weights), silk ribbon (in three sizes) and hand-dyed 100/3 silk known as "Luminescence." We stock the Gloriana silk floss, which is a 12-strand silk. .
Gloriana has just announced that in the future they will no longer offer their 12-strand silk in 4 yard skeins, only in 6 yard skeins (also the appearance of the 6 yard skeins will change, not being tightly twisted as in the past). We normally offer their silk in 4 yard skeins to keep the price down but now will have to gradually shift as we get new inventory that will only be available in 6 yard skeins. This will be a long and difficult transition (just like so many things in life!). The 6 yard skeins are $9.00 each. For an alphabetical list of Gloriana silk floss, click here.
2021 note: shipments from Gloriana are taking much longer than in the past (3 plus months) and coming in incomplete. If you have any urgent needs or need us to check our existing stock prior to placing an order, we are glad to do so.
Gloriana colors are shown below (images provided by Gloriana Threads and used with their permission), but please keep in mind that thread colors will vary with dye lots, and also appear differently on different computer monitors.

SILK CHENILLE EMBROIDERY THREAD (Soie Chenille à Broder) made by the Au Ver a Soie® company is a type of thread that has a long history but that had disappeared from existence until recently. This wonderful, plush, velvety thread resembles a caterpillar (caterpillar in French is chenille), albeit a very luxurious one. It should not be confused with chenille yarns manufactured for knitting, some of which are now being sold as chenille embroidery threads - this is the "real McCoy." Currently available in the following colors, most numbers are the same as Soie d'alger color numbers, and colors are similar, although the chenille construction changes the thread color slightly. French color names appear after the color number, but can be misleading (the 2913 "violet" family is actually a geranium pink family).
Silk chenille colors are:
Blanc (white) |
Noir (black) |
131 Turquoise (pale aqua) |
621 Capucine (golden yellow) |
945 Grenat (deep red) |
1441 Myosotis (pale dusty blue) |

SILK MORI is a 6-ply spun silk thread. Many of the colors coordinate with the colors of Silk Serica. Colors 0103 through 0924 are called "Milkpaint" colors and do not come in silk serica. Due to the acquisition of Kreinik Manufacturing by Rainbow Gallery in 2024, and the decision of Rainbow Gallery to package silk mori on cards rather than in skeins, we will no longer restock or sell silk mori as colors sell out - the cards require vastly more space than the skeins did.
If you want to buy Silk Mori or Silk Serica while we still have it please contact us to check availability of your color(s). We have removed the color listing for these two threads because it confuses people who think just because a color is listed, it means we still have it for sale.
SILK SERICA is a 3-ply filament silk thread (the 3 plies are twisted together and typically would not be divided but used as is). The colors coordinate with the colors of Silk Mori. Due to the acquisition of Kreinik Manufacturing by Rainbow Gallery in 2024, and the decision of Rainbow Gallery to package silk serica on cards rather than spools, we will no longer restock or sell silk serica as colors sell out - the cards require vastly more space than the spools.
If you want to buy Silk Mori or Silk Serica while we still have it please contact us to check availability of your color(s). We have removed the color listing for these two threads because it confuses people who think just because a color is listed, it means we still have it for sale. Price per 11 yard (10 meter) spool of Silk Serica (while supplies last)
Silk Ribbon by YLI is no longer being imported to the US. As a result we are now carry River Silks ribbon, primarily in 4mm with some 7mm and very limited selection of 13mm. We carry a good selection of colors, but not all. Please contact us if you need silk ribbon.
SILK/WOOL BLEND THREAD

Petite Silk Lame Braid from Rainbow Gallery is a thread made of silk with metallic filament added. Made by Rainbow Gallery in three weights, we currently stock only the Petite version. This is made of 92% silk, 5% rayon and 3% metallized polyester. Despite Rainbow Gallery's suggestions, most of the time we feel this is a better "fit" on 18 mesh canvas; very slightly on the light side but preferable to the bulkiness of the regular Silk Lame which supposedly ia the best choice for 18 mesh. A fourth version of lame is in a ribbon form called Silk Lame Plus which we also do not stock.
